The Compensation Employees' Union was certified in May 1974. About two thirds of the 2,100 members work in the lower mainland. There are offices in Richmond, Burnaby, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, and Abbotsford. The rest of the members work in area offices in Victoria, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Kelowna, Kamloops, Nelson, Prince George, Fort St. John, and Terrace.

The CEU is an all inclusive bargaining unit representing all workers at the Workers' Compensation Board that are not excluded by law. The membership ranges from cleaners, support positions, technical positions, officer level positions, physiologists, and lawyers.

The union is a democratic organization. The elected executive make decisions and carry out the membership's will. Full–time hired staff attends to the day-to-day running of the union.
